Colleen interviews with People Magazine's Peoplepets.com

An aussie-beagle mix left unsupervised in a yard for too long is recipe for destruction!
Note to all owners: A yard is only as good as the human in it and if your dog is bored, he'll find things to do!

Here's the interview:

Not always an easy topic, but this is something that should be considered before you are emotionally overwhelmed by your pet's ailing health.

Any time spent with your pet should be cherished. End of life is simply a part of life. Taking control and positively impacting your pet's end of life experience is another way of being the best pet parent possible.

Colleen's Tips - Ditch your dog's food dish

We bred dogs to work. Since we've brought them into our homes and families however, we expect them to be couch potatoes most of the day.

It's time to ditch your dog's food dish! Using food stuffed toys to feed your dog will burn physical and mental energy, develop healthy chew habits and decrease any destructive behavior in your home.

Colleen's latest article on Dogtime.com Embrace your dog - just not literally

I KNOW this is a really hard one for everyone to swallow.
Please join dogtime.com and check in every Monday. Colleen will have a featured dog body language section dedicated to teaching people to speak Dog by understanding body langauge basics.
Let's reduce the 4.5 million dog bites per year!
Dog bites NEVER happen out of the blue. Dogs tell us long before they are going to bite us. We just don't hear them!
If you love your dog - you wil take the time to learn what he's trying to tell you!
He talks to you every single time you so much as look at him! Truly, it's fascinating!

Your dog is talking - so listen up! The tale of the tail.

"BUT, his tail wagging when he bit me!"

If I had a dollar for each time i have heard this, I'd be one wealthy dog trainer.

That is the trick of the tail! Somehow we silly humans have come to believe that a tail wag is THE sign of a happy dog.

Because we've bred our dogs to be very social, most tails you encounter will indeed be happy, but along the way, you will see some that are nervous, and others that are ready for a throw down (watch out!).

Here's how to read that tail of the moment:

Happy Tail: This coffee table hazard is accompanied by a loose, relaxed dog. Similar to a rubberband or cooked spaghetti, the body is wigglin' and movin'. The tail can be high or level with the plane of the back and very widely and loosely wagging back and forth.
This tail is welcoming a greeting from you! Go for it! "HELLO DOG! I'm Dog Lover! NICE to meet you!"

Nervous Tail/Unsure Tail: Is carried below the plane of the back and maybe even tucked between the legs. Only the tip, if anything, is moving. This pup is slinking along either toward you or away. This dog is still likely social, just not sure what to quite make of you. Be gentle, go slow and be calmly reassuring. Let the pup approach you.
"Hey there Fella, it's OK. I'm Dog Lover. Aww..good boy."

Aroused/Aggressive Tail: Is high over the plane of back. It is tightly waving, just at the tip, erratically. It is accompanied by a stiff dog, who's body appears "frozen still."
"Alrighty then Fido, let me give you a WIDE berth. I'm Dog Lover, but I'm outta here."

We should all know how to speak dog effectively. Increasing our ability to understand what dogs are telling us, keeps both us and the dogs we to love to love safe.

Warm, wiggling wags!

ps - Be sure to pass on this information. Tell your tale of being fluent in dog tail!

Teach your dog to say, "PLEASE!" - The automatic sit

Your dog can learn to automatically sit when he sees something he wants. This is fantastic considering your dog's likely impulsive wiring tells him to JUMP, GO FOR IT! GRAB IT!
I've written this for your meal time dishes, but you can use this exercise for toys, food stuffed toys (which really should replace your bowl anyway) and anything else your dog wants!

Homeopathy for Fleas and Ticks

Columbia County, NY is where our family resides. This beautiful country side also happens to be where lots of ticks reside too!

I like to treat things as naturally as possible. I know many opt pet parents for "spot on" flea and tick prevention.

You can use these homeopathic remedies as stand alones or in conjunction with the "spot on" treatments.

Terrific Treats!

After years of searching, testing and tasting - these are my top three favorite treats for training and stuffing into enrichment toys. I am confident your dog will love them just as much as the 1,000s of dogs who gave their four paw rating over the years! Enjoy!

Wooftastic Finds

My priorities when shopping for pets are:
1. Practical - I only purchase items that are easily washed and durable.
2. Enriching - Dogs and cats need a place to put their energy. Toys need to pacify my pets and provide them with a job.
3. Aesthetically Appealling - I love my pets and my house. The two must come together. I chose items that serve a purpose and blend in with my interior decor.

Luna's picks of the litter - she must have it

Luna is my lady of..
1. Leisure
2. Laughs
3. Smells (both those made by her and those she likes to roll in)
4. Tastes (those she likes to nibble on as well as her refined canine style)

Don't get me wrong. Luna is in her heart of hearts a completely goofy and lovable country gal who just happens to keep one paw anchored in NYC's canine fashion scene.

Here's her most recent ear marks...

Luna has bins full of collars. Admittedly, I went a bit nuts in her first two years of life. There has since been a family intervention for my frivolous collar spending, but every once in a while....well, splurge. My...eerrr...her eye is currently set on this prize.

Paco collars are all handmade and they guarantee the hardware for life which is important for my not so petit beefcake. You can also have the collar turned into a bracelet upon the passing of your dog (we won;t go there). Find it at www.pacocollars.com

We love this company, Harry Barker. They have a great sense of simplicity, and are equally as style conscious as they are mother earth conscious. Check out their vintage inspired simple bowls. Pretty, right? These bowls will leave our cat questioning her civil liberties, but whatever, she can use a bit of a dethroning..

Luna is a fan of sleep. Similar to me, she has two settings; 75mph and bouncing off walls or totally zonked out. Bedding is important to us two speeders.
The bed she's photographed on above was an etsy.com purchase by Bowwow Beds.
Etsy served us well again on this one! This bed is a cover only. It is made of 100% cotton duck canvas. No zipper closure and you just take your own filler and stuff it. In my case we used bed pillows, but as of late..we're thinking of switching to memory foam. Beauty is pain. So is age (hers...not mine).

Her OTHER bed of choice..lambskin rugs. These lovies are easy on the eye in terms of interior decor and so soft and scrumptious. Like her bowwow bed cover, easily washed too(throw the entire thing in the machine).

Enjoy!
